How to avoid extra fees at the airport

It’s safe to say no one enjoys airports. Whether it is the painstakingly long lines, the abrasive security staff, or the constant delays; there is hardly a pleasant thing about it. One thing that you can avoid to make your time at the airport more pleasant is to avoid paying extra fees at the airport. Here are some of our favorite tips on how to avoid paying extra fees at the airport.

Get Points
Before you travel to the airport be sure you are using the right credit card. That way anything you do have to buy you will get points on. Many credit cards offer double or triple rewards on travel expenses. Having the right credit in order to earn bonus points is to offset the extra fees at the airport. Just be sure you pay your bill off completely to avoid any interest charges which can quickly outweigh any perks you have received.

Don’t Buy Anything
While we understand this is easier said than done, really try not to buy anything at the airport. Whether you need a magazine, cup of coffee,  or last minute pair of headphones; expect to pay between 150%-300% for any purchases made in the terminal. Plan ahead for your trip to the airport be sure you have everything you need. If you are running ahead of schedule stop by a restaurant or shop on the way to the airport to make sure you have everything you need prior to arrival. Remember the more money you save at the airport, the more money you have for your vacation.

PreBook Extras
As you likely already know, airlines charge for everything for everything these days. While some have got as cheap as charging for water on board, nearly all will charge for meals and checked baggage. When booking your flight online you often have the option to add meals, baggage, or any other extras. While the sticker shock of these items may be enough to have you clicking “no thanks” remember that they will likely cost 50% more if booked at the airport. So if you know you will end up needing checked luggage or buying an in-flight meal, do yourself a favor and book it ahead of time so you will save some serious money.

Be Skeptical of Duty Free
Duty Free shops can be a massive draw, especially when traveling internationally and with time to kill at the airport. Their selection of fine liquors and intoxicating perfumes can be an easy way for many passengers to drop big bucks while waiting for a flight. Don’t assume everything at duty-free is a great deal, do your homework! In the age of smartphones it is easy to google the prices in your home country. You may find out that the bottle of Chanel or Jameson is actually cheaper at your local department store or through online delivery than it is at duty-free. Also, be sure the country you are traveling to will allow you to get through customs with whatever you by, you don’t wnat to end up having to forfeit a box of Cuban cigars!
